APPLIED PRECISION SPONSORS WORKSHOPS ON FUTURE TRENDS IN APPLICATIONS AND TECHNOLOGIES IN THE MICROARRAY MARKET

Discussion of new protocols, designs, instruments and software to benefit academia and private sector

Issaquah, Wash., October 8, 2001 - Applied Precision, Inc., a developer of measurement, analysis and process control systems for biomedical and biotechnology imaging and analysis systems, is the leading sponsor of a series of free workshops on future trends in applications and technologies in the microarray market. The workshops feature specialists from business, academia and independent research centers and are being held at nine different cities in the U.S.

Workshop topics include microarray protocols, experiment design, new array technologies, multiple channel scanning solutions, data mining and management, new product launches and hands-on usage of the latest instrumentation and software. The workshops are designed to address topics of interest to attendees from both academia and industry.

This traveling workshop has been well received by attendees from diverse backgrounds. According to Dr. Michael Story of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas who attended the Houston workshop with his whole staff, "It was very useful to see a number of vendors demonstrate their products all at the same time, including products that are in the pipeline. The opportunity for my staff to see hybridization systems was especially instructive." Brian Coullahan of Arizona Research Labs in Tucson liked the objectivity of the workshop he attended in Phoenix during July. "I particularly appreciated the unbiased nature of the workshop. Attention was given to the state of the science and the technology and not particular vendor products."

Speakers for the workshops are from business, academia, and independent research centers. They include specialists from Applied Precision, Inc., Baylor College of Medicine, BioDiscovery, Inc., BioRobotics, Cartesian Technologies, Genisphere, the Institute for Systems Biology, M.D. Anderson, Rockefeller University, Scripps Research Institute, Silicon Genetics and Telechem/ArrayIt.com. Speakers are subject to change based on location.

Past workshops were held in Phoenix and Palo Alto in July, Houston in late September and the National Institute of Health in the first week of October. Upcoming workshops for the remainder of the year are as follows:

- October 10 Philadelphia, Pa.
- October 17 Chicago, Ill.
- November 7 New York, N.Y.
- November 29 Seattle, Wash.
- December 5 San Francisco, Calif.

Paul Gindlesperger, Applied Precision's worldwide sales manager for microarray scanning reports record attendance of specialists from both academia and industry at the four workshops held to date, including the most recent workshop at the National Institute of Health.

DeltaVision® is a family of fully integrated, optimized microscopy systems designed to look at multiple probes and samples over longer periods of time than other imaging systems. These systems are uniquely suited for 3D and 2D live cell applications. As biological questions increase in complexity and sensitivity, there is a greater need for higher image quality. Improved resolution and contrast yield greater quantitative measurements and therefore more reliable results.
